The English curriculum at Hove Park School is designed around promoting enjoyment of the written and spoken word, and empowering students to become life-long readers. We aim to ignite and foster a passion for reading that will open up new knowledge, experiences and viewpoints for all students. Students will build up the skills to critically engage with the writer’s craft. They will develop skills in understanding, analysing and evaluating texts, at the same time critically evaluating the writer’s purpose and perspectives. Students will consider the contexts in which texts are written, helping them to develop compassion and empathy for a range of issues facing people in modern and historical societies, both in this country and globally.
Developing students’ reading skills is increasingly important in an expanding digital world. Students will be equipped with the skills to question and evaluate the information presented to them, and to be able to understand the purpose behind texts.
As writers, students will learn and develop the tools to express themselves creatively, powerfully and with clarity. Students will be equipped to write discursively, formulate and argue their points of view and critically evaluate the world around them. Students will learn to be effective communicators in the 21st century.
The curriculum builds upon skills year on year, with a focus on developing reading, writing, spoken language and vocabulary. The skills students acquire in English provides access to all other subjects, at all levels. The transferable communication, analytical and evaluative skills taught in English are invaluable in all subjects, further study and employment.
The English curriculum at Hove Park School is rich and varied, reflecting our diverse school community. All students are given the opportunity to study stimulating and challenging fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays from different cultures as well as British literary heritage.
