At Hove Park we value the global world in which our students are growing up in and we foster an understanding of the culture, people and history of the target language country. In Chinese on the MEP course we have a very clear mission of supporting students to achieve “near fluency” across years 7-11. Events and topics studied include: food and eating routines and differences across China, transport and travel, calligraphy and writing techniques, cultural activities and society (such as Chinese New Year) and a host of topics linked to genuine interaction scenarios, such as buying travel tickets, accessing data on the internet and using media platforms. This is all supported in non-COVID times by subsidised travel to China for cultural as well as language enhancement purposes. There is a clear pathway for studying Chinese on into A level in school and we have had our first graduates in universities having taken Chinese all the way through school.
